Fiberglass Mesh Filter for Molten Aluminum Casting
Fiberglass mesh filter is disposable functional foundry consumable specially developed for aluminum and aluminum‑alloy casting. Manufactured from alkali‑free E‑glass fiberglass fabric with special refractory surface treatment, it physically traps oxide slag, dross, sand residues and non‑metallic inclusions inside molten aluminum during pouring.
Proper filtration reduces slag‑hole, inclusion‑related scrap and improves surface finish & mechanical consistency for aluminum castings. We supply two main product grades for aluminum foundries:
Standard Resin‑Coated Fiberglass Filter Mesh: Cost‑effective general‑purpose grade for mass‑production ordinary castings
Carbonized Smokeless Fiberglass Filter Mesh: Premium low‑gas grade for high‑precision, porosity‑sensitive aluminum components
-
Placement: The filter screen is typically placed in the runner system or at the sprue base to ensure all metal passes through it.
-
Compatibility: This type of filter is specifically designed for aluminum and its alloys (e.g., A356, 380). It is not suitable for metals with higher melting points, such as iron or steel.
Core Benefits of Our Aluminum Fiberglass Filter Mesh
- Made of pure alkali-free E-glass fiber, will not change chemical composition of molten aluminum alloy
- Effective interception for Al₂O₃ oxide film, slag, sand particles and other non-metallic impurities
- Flexible material: easy to cut into discs, squares, caps and irregular custom shapes with scissors or utility knife
- Good thermal-shock resistance, keeps integrity under normal aluminum pouring temperature range
- More economical compared with ceramic foam filters for primary-stage gating-system filtration
- Recyclable leftover aluminum material after filtration; filtered scrap aluminum can go back to melting furnace
- Wide compatibility for multiple aluminum casting processes
High-Performance Glass Fiber Filter Mesh - Superior Aluminum Melt Filtration at Lower Cost
- Resin-coated grade: reinforced by organic refractory resin; smoke and moderate gas will generate during pouring. Best for cost-sensitive general castings.
- Carbonized smokeless grade: Undergoes anaerobic high-temperature carbonization to remove most organic binders in-factory. Nearly smokeless pouring with ultra-low gas-evolution, designed for precision castings sensitive to pinhole / porosity defects.

How Aluminum Fiberglass Mesh Filter Works
- Install filter piece within sprue cup, sprue base or runner system, ensure all molten aluminum flows through the woven mesh.
- Large-sized slag and dross are blocked on filter surface. Fine oxide fragments are captured inside interwoven fiber network.
- Clean molten aluminum passes through mesh apertures and fills mold cavity.
- Filter maintains structural integrity for the full pouring cycle (single-pour disposable application, not for long-time molten-metal holding).

Filter Screen Production Scenarios
Metal casting foundries face a persistent challenge: slag, oxides, and non-metallic inclusions contaminate molten aluminum, leading to porosity, surface defects, and mechanical weakness in finished castings. Traditional ceramic filters, while effective, are expensive, fragile during handling, and require careful storage. Many manufacturers struggle with high operational costs.
Our Fiberglass Mesh Filter delivers a superior solution. Constructed from specialized high-temperature glass fibers with proprietary weaving techniques, this filtration cloth creates a filtration network that captures impurities. The flexible, durable mesh withstands thermal shock and mechanical stress during pouring operations, maintaining structural integrity throughout the filtration process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cut fiberglass filter mesh to custom sizes for my mold?
Yes. Both resin-coated and carbonized grades can be cut with sharp scissors or utility knife. We recommend leaving 20-30 mm overlap margin around edges to avoid metal bypass. For complex geometry, cardboard template pre-making is suggested. You may keep standard-size sheets in-house and cut on-site to lower your inventory burden.
What temperature can E-glass fiberglass filter withstand for aluminum casting?
Continuous working temperature range is 700-800℃, matching typical aluminum pouring temperature (680-760℃). Short-term peak can reach 850-900℃. Sustained temperature exceeding 900℃ will lead to fiber softening and risk of mesh breakage. For iron / steel high-emperature pouring, please select our high-silica fiberglass mesh series.
Will fiberglass filter contaminate molten aluminum?
When genuine alkali-free E-glass material is adopted, the filter will not react with molten aluminum and will not alter alloy composition. Spectral analysis of filtered melt shows no harmful element increment.
Risk warning: If low-cost medium-alkali C-glass mesh is used, alkali-metal element leaching will cause pinhole, porosity and fiber-inclusion defects in final castings.
What is the core difference between resincoated grade and carbonized smokeless grade?
Resin-coated grade uses organic refractory resin as reinforcement; it is cost-effective but generates smoke and moderate gas during pouring.
Carbonized smokeless grade goes through anaerobic carbonization treatment to remove most organic binders, delivering nearly smokeless pouring performance with ultra-low gas-evolution, ideal for precision castings with strict porosity specifications.
Can I use aluminum grade fiberglass mesh for cast iron or steel?
No. E-glass aluminum-purpose mesh cannot sustain high pouring temperature of iron or steel. Please refer to our high-silica fiberglass filter mesh product series for ferrous-metal casting.
